Grades 3-5 The first volume in the Detective Nosegoode series introduces Ambrosius Nosegoode, a mild-mannered, observant fellow who happens to be a retired sleuth, and Cody, his amiable shaggy mutt, who secretly converses with his master and plays a time-honored literary role: the great detective's clueless sidekick. When a local clockmaker discovers the theft of a music box, he asks Mr. Nosegoode to investigate. While Cody immediately suspects a suspicious-looking new neighbor, the detective reserves judgment until he has collected clues, cogitated, and come to the correct conclusion. The first volume in a classic children's book series in Poland, where it was first published 50 years ago, the book has a steady pace and some amusing moments, generally involving Cody. The quality of the book's binding, cover, and design are uncommonly good for a paperback, and the high-quality pages show off Flisak's distinctive black-and-white drawings very well. Readers who enjoy the quirky characters and well-constructed mysteries can look forward to two more adventures featuring Detective Nosegoode in the coming months.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
