The Angel Inside

A cynical young businessman reconsiders his life and career by visiting Florence, where he is unknowingly enlightened by Michelangelo, who is charmingly re-created using the great artist's own ideas and words. This enlightenment is organized around the artist's approach to carving the statue of David, and his early career conflicts. Though advice such as find your passion, act boldly, and have confidence will be familiar, it sounds fresh and potent in this gem of a parable. One must give credit to the author's narration, which is immensely respectful toward Michelangelo, his technique, and the depth of his wisdom. The analogy of rough carving and then polishing stone to perfection works well when applied to the continuous personal work people must do to reveal "the angel inside." T.W.
