Set in the late 1800s, this delightful tale introduces Carrington Brouwer, left penniless by her father's death. She takes a coveted position as an artist in a carousel factory, where many of the male workers resent her presence. When the factory owner is robbed, Carrington falls under suspicion. VERDICT Miller's ("A Daughter's Inheritance") attention to historical detail and her convincing heroine make this an enjoyable novel for lovers of historical romances and inspirational women's fiction.

With her fathers recent death, Carrington Brouwer has neither reason nor funds to remain in Paris, so staying with her friend Augusta Galloway in Ohio will be the first step in building a new life in America. The only problem is that Augustas ambitious mother is less than delighted to have Carrie as a guest. So when a job painting carousel horses in Mr. Galloways factory presents itself, Carrie sees it as a chance for independence. The only problem is that most of the menincluding factory manager Josef Kaestnerdont want her there, which means she is going to have to work twice as hard just to prove her worth. Readers swept away by Amanda Hartes Hidden Falls series will be equally entranced with Millers latest inspirational, which neatly blends a richly detailed late-nineteenth-century midwestern setting, fascinating details on carousel craftsmanship, and a surfeit of realistically idiosyncratic characters into a sweetly charming love story.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
