The American Southeast is a somewhat compact and easily driven region of the United States. This title is an excellent if specific guide for quick trips from the mountains of North Carolina to the Everglades of Florida, with the musical attractions of Mississippi and plenty of places in between. Arranged geographically and then by topic, the road trips cater to a wide range of interests. The Kentucky section, for example, lists trips for both horse and bourbon lovers. The majority of the stops are outdoors and there is a good mix of traditional, well-known sites, such as national parks, and quirky, off-the-beaten-trail destinations, including several small towns. The trip information is concise but informative, and includes driving directions, maps, brief location descriptions, and tips on when to go. Hotel and restaurant information is limited, usually only a single page. This should not, however, keep anyone from using this book. Everyone from Elvis fans to Civil War buffs, hikers to architecture lovers is likely to find a trail they would be happy to follow. VERDICT A handy guide for Southerners and unconventional travelers.--Sara Miller Rohan, Archive Librarian, Atlanta
