The culture of the Native Americans living in the Colorado Plateau, or Four-Corners Country as it is popularly known today, dates back at least 10,000 years. Royea (archaeology, Bishop's Univ., Sherbrooke, Que.) packs a tour of this history into a 14-day car trip through New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. Significant archaeological sites are described in detail, along with maps, photographs, information on services (important in a sparsely populated region), and history. Two sections deal in detail with Mesa Verde in Colorado and Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, perhaps the most well known of the many sites described. The end of the book includes a useful glossary of common archaeological terms and an extensive bibliography. Most travelers will be hard pressed to cover all the locations discussed in 14 days, however. VERDICT Don't be confused by the book's title. This is a marvelous guide to the best Indian archeological sites in the Southwest. Both first-time visitors and experienced tourists will find this a most useful travel companion.--Olga Wise, formerly with Compaq Computers Inc., Austin, TX
