This guide introduces readers to an innovative artistic medium that combines sewing and drawing. Techniques presented here bear some relation to more familiar embroidery techniques, but textile artist James focuses primarily upon stitches made with sewing machines, rather than by hand. Preliminary chapters cover both drawing and stitching basics. Step-by-step exercises, in-studio photos, and detailed close-ups of highly varied surfaces help to illuminate techniques for transferring sketches to fabric, and using photography both as a tool and as a material, adding color, and subject matter. Most interesting, a section at the end of the book shows a few of the many possible ways to apply and present stitch drawings, from sculpture to collage to textiles to handmade books. Finished stitch drawings by the author and other artists provide further inspiration. VERDICT Crossover appeal for fine arts and crafts hobbyist readers of all skill levels is offered here.
