Using the series signature question-and-answer format, this title offers 600 entries on the major artists, schools, periods, movements, and techniques of art from all areas of the world. Arranged chronologically (after an introductory chapter explaining art principles and history, such as What is art? What is beauty?) from the art of the ancient world c.5000 BCE-400 BCE to contemporary art from the 1960s to the present, the book provides much fascinating detail. Humor is a welcome extra in entries that ask, for example, "Why do Egyptian figures have two left feet?," "Why is Emperor Comoodus dressed as Hercules?," and "Were there any professional women artists during the 15th and 16th centuries?" Key works of art are depicted in the title's 145 color photos and illustrations, and helpful charts delineate more complex or confusing concepts.
