The author of the best-selling account A Season on the Brink ( LJ 11/1/86) now offers a baseball odyssey from the rites of spring training to the World Series. As Feinstein writes, "baseball is a big, brawling, often ugly business. The antipathy many fans now feel toward the people in the game is more than justified." With escalating salaries (one out of seven players earns at least $3 million per year), inflated egos and ticket prices, and owners on probation, the image of the game has been tarnished. Conversely, and the subtitle not-withstanding, the author also looks at what is right with America's national pastime. Human interest stories and humor abound. This book, primarily a documentation of the 1992 major league season, provides an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at aspects of baseball that fans seldom see. Recommended for public libraries.-- Albert Spencer, Coll. of Education, Univ. of Nevada-Las Vegas
