The notion of getting into the "right" college or university is a stressful one for many high school students and their parents. Thus, it is no surprise that there are a dizzying number of guides that offer advice on the subject. As its title suggests, this book focuses on choosing a college based on a student's interests and financial situation rather than the college's "elite" reputation (or lack thereof). It also presents strategies for getting the most out of college, no matter what school someone might attend. Educational consultant White (The Complete Guide to the Gap Year) explains that the key to achieving the most out of high school, college, and beyond is developing a "success profile," which involves elements such as a growth mind-set, a path toward a sense of purpose, and improved critical thinking skills. She also includes several sections dedicated to debunking myths about college admissions and the link between elite colleges and student success. VERDICT Useful advice that puts the emphasis where it should be--on the student. This title will appeal to parents of high schoolers.--Sara Holder, McGill Univ. Libs., Montreal
