While good manners may be timeless, their acceptable expression varies from generation to generation. New technology and changing lifestyles have introduced new situations undreamed of in the original Amy Vanderbilt's day. Entirely rewritten and updated from the last edition (1978), this venerable guide provides commonsense direction for modern life. Included are discussions of cellular phones, unmarried couples living together, either heterosexual or gay, business travel, especially for women, and many other new topics, as well as the standard information on table settings, weddings, funerals, and tipping. The authors gloss over safe sex rather quickly; it would have been nice if they had addressed the delicate question of asking one's partner to use a condom. Still, even with this flaw, this is a very comprehensive work that belongs in every public library.--Susan B. Hagloch, Tuscarawas Cty. P.L., New Philadelphia, Ohio
