Owens's latest entry in the Heart series (Heart Dance
, etc.) is a touching tale of learning to trust again. Lahsin Burdock Yew is an underage noblewoman being abused by her brutish husband. When she comes of age, she repudiates her marriage and flees to a sanctuary where she can go through her Second Passage, a difficult and sometimes deadly ritual that will cause her magical Flair to be revealed. Meanwhile, nobleman Tinne Holly is recovering from a scandal: his wife has divorced him, making it the first divorce in noble history. Tinne knows that Lahsin is his Heartmate (his soul mate), but he is forbidden by law from telling her. Instead he goes to the sanctuary to heal his own broken heart and try to protect Lahsin from her Passage and help tend to her emotional wounds. But as they grow closer, the specter of Lahsin's ex-husband looms, threatening her freedom and their happiness. Even for readers unfamiliar with the Heart
world, Owens makes it easily accessible and full of delightful conceits such the Residences, houses with consciousnesses and personalities.

Wed at 14 to a brutal man, 17-year-old Lahsin Burdock Yew has felt the first signs of her Second Passage (when her specialized psi-powers will blossom and she may learn whether or not she has a HeartMate) and knows she must escape the control of both the Yew and Burdock families. She flees, repudiating her underage marriage, and finds sanctuary in the neglected legendary healing garden, the First Grove. Tinne Holly, long aware that Lahsin is his destined HeartMate, now must find her, win her trust, and keep her safemade more difficult because he can't tell her they are linked. Set on the planet Celta amid a feudalistic, family/clan-based society where telepathic animals and people with strong psychic powers are the norm, this emotionally rich tale blends paranormal abilities, family dynamics, and politics; adds a serious dash of violence; and dusts it all with humor and whimsy. The intriguing result is the seventh in Owens's popular Celta series. Owens ("Heart Dance") lives in the Denver area.

In Owens seventh book set on the magic-infusedplanet Celta, Tinne Holly is devastated whenhis wife divorces him, a painful eventunheard of among the great families of Druida. Lahsin was married off at 14 to a sadistic and abusiveold pedophile. When her second passage starts, greatly enhancingher Flair, her magical gifts thatwill accord her adult status, shedisavows her marriage andruns away to Druida. Finding refuge in the legendary hidden FirstGrove, she befriends a crippled dog and Tinne Holly. Tinne knows Lahsin is his HeartMate but cannot tell her yet, so he starts training her in self-defense to help heal the psychic trauma she experienced in her marriage. Animal familiars, sentient houses, including a delightful young house just learning the ropes, and brief visits with characters from previous Celta novels make this a true delight to read, and it should garner new fans for this unique and enjoyable series offuturistic fantasy romances.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2008, American Library Association.)
