Starred review from May 15, 2015
First impressions are often lasting impressions, and the firstand lastingimpression of this massive, important anthology of sf short stories (nearly 40 in number) is delivered by the first story the reader encounters, The Fifth Dragon, by British author Ian McDonald, which appeared originally in the anthology Reach for Infinity (2014). This story is a sublime example of current sf ingenuity in the short-fiction form. The gritty life of immigrant workers on the moon is created for the reader with carefully thought-out detail. All stories gathered here, by such quality writers as Alastair Reynolds, Karl Schroeder, and Nancy Kress, keep the light of superiority shining brightly through all 700 pages. Veteran sf author and editor Dozois' Summation: 2014 occupies the book's first several pages. It is a highly informative overview of the past year in sf publishing, with facts and comments on mass-market paperback publishing, e-book trends, the current condition of the sf print magazine market, the world of online-only sf magazines, and even today's sf and fantasy television shows. In all, this is a highly valuable addition to all public library collections.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
