In order to protect her four-year-old daughter, Lula, Justine Cantrell flees England, changes her name, and moves to Culver, IN. Justine only remembers happy childhood visits to her grandmother's home on Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver. But once there, she discovers she wasn't the only Cantrell to conceal family secrets: her grandmother's destroyed the family. Now, as Justine tries to hide her identity from her new friends, she fears her search for her grandmother's forgotten house might open old wounds. And, the news coverage of her search for the house might reveal the truth about Justine's own past. The story unfolds slowly, alternating between her life in a new town and her memories of what appeared to be a charmed existence in Chipping Vale, a life changed forever by a horrifying tragedy. Lewis (Too Close to Home) tells of generations altered by shocking actions. VERDICT The story is drawn out, developing slowly, which heightens the suspense, but this may discourage readers. This is for those who can wade through a carefully developed background to experience one disturbing scene that leads to destruction of a family and community. Fans of Jodi Picoult's stories involving family or social issues may find it appealing.--Lesa Holstine, Evansville Vanderburgh P.L., IN
