A recreational hike in the mountains rimming California's Mojave Desert strands four people connected with a movie shooting; one of them is Rob Christian, a popular actor. Another harbors a secret identity (he's really Radovan Milocek, a notorious Serbian war criminal). Violence follows, and not all four survive as a chaotic scramble down the mountain ensues. A missing persons report goes out, and the search-and-rescue team assembles. Gracie Kinkaid and Steve Cashman go after the hikers, while their leader, Ralph Hunter, monitors from the command post. Determinedly capable, Gracie partners well with the hotdogging Steve as they rescue injured Rob, who is suffering from head trauma. Unbeknownst to the trio, Radovan is trolling the mountains for them. Nature conspires against the group as a freak snowstorm moves in, and Ralph waits helplessly below. VERDICT This exciting, seriously good adventure debut deserves a place in your book carts. With her spunky female leading the way, Rowland dishes out generous portions of adrenaline rush. While the mystery plot is slim, her adventure writing style has real flair.
