The fur and feathers fly fast and furiously in this blood-soaked anthropomorphic fantasy inspired by spaghetti Westerns and thrillers. Once upon a time, a mission in the city called the Capital went horribly awry, thanks to turncoats and infighting. Now the mouse known only as the Captain is determined to finish the job. To that end, he reunites the surviving members of his group, including opossum sniper Boudica, stoat assassin Bonsoir, and sinister salamander Cinnabar. The Captain and his motley band go up against old enemies and former allies in their quest for justice and revenge, but what starts off as a cunning plan ultimately turns into a suicidal hailstorm of bullets, bombs, and bodies. Polansky (She Who Waits) employs a style that’s knowing and sly, a little tongue-in-cheek but deadly serious; it’s as though Brian Jacques and Quentin Tarantino went drinking one night. Short chapters and a nonlinear narrative turn this novella into a quick read, with some surprises and twists revealed so matter-of-factly that they’re easily overlooked. The combination of animal traits and human motivations generates a violently compelling story that’s strong enough to overcome any questions of logistics and worldbuilding. Agent: Chris Kepner, Victoria Sanders and Associates.

Getting the gang back together for one more job is classic caper plotting, but in this case the gang leader is a mouse named Captain, and his crew includes a badger, stoat, possum, mole, and salamander. They were all part of a failed political battle years ago, and Captain and his allies intend to overthrow the current leader of the kingdom and get revenge on those who betrayed them. VERDICT Given this title's slim length and the many enjoyable pages devoted to introducing each gang member, there is not a lot of time for the attack itself. Still, Polansky ("Low Town" trilogy) makes the most of his page count and keeps the pacing at the end quick and the violence quotient high. If you ever wondered about a grim version of Brian Jacques's Redwall, check out this novella, one in a superb new lineup from Tor.com.--MM

Revenge is a powerful emotion, and if you are already a stone-cold killer, it can be a dangerous weapon as well. In this briskly paced, dark fantasy epic, the Captain, a mouse, is a brilliant and talented outlaw who was previously bested but is now determined to avenge his loss. He rounds up his old team of small animals (e.g., mole, badger, owl, salamander) to reignite the war between the brother Lords and reinstate the Elder to the throne. The characters are animals, yes, but they are not the least bit cuddly. All are well-trained assassins with a special talent; all want their Lord to stay in power; and each spills plenty of blood along the way. This is Redwall all grown up, with a western sensibility. Expect excellent world building, a huge cast of interesting characters, and a suspenseful, well-executed storytelling style that keeps the reader guessing until the final page. Despite the high body count, there is also a satisfying amount of smart, dark humor here. A great option for fans of off-kilter fiction like Patrick deWitt's The Sisters Brothers (2011) or almost anything by Elmore Leonard.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
