Just off the Tasmanian coast, Bruny Island is a wild, windswept place and the former home of the dying Mary Mason, who has chosen to spend her final days there, much to the consternation of her three grown children. Mary spends her days remembering, struggling with a secret she knows must eventually be revealed. Her youngest son, Tom, has his own struggles. Raised on Bruny, he understands Mary's attraction to the island, but after a traumatic winter spent working in Antarctica, Tom returns home with his life in shambles. Lonely, isolated, and deeply depressed, Tom tries to rebuild his life as his mother works to come to terms with her own. Nature plays an important role here. The rocky isolation of Bruny Island and the vast, spreading whiteness of Antarctica are presented in loving detail by an author who clearly knows and respects her landscapes. These descriptions serve as a powerful complement to this moving story of changing family dynamics and the isolation and solitude found in nature and within ourselves.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
