Humphreys switches from the McGuire Brothers series (Brave the Heat, 2015) to her paranormal Dead in the City series. Dakota Shelton is the newest sentry for the New York City coven. A Texas cowboy with a drawl and an odd longing for cinnamon lollipops, he can't help but feel out of place in this crazy group of vampires, angels, and werewolves. Trixie LaRoux is tough as they come, but Dakota knows underneath the makeup and the wild hairdo there is a woman who makes his heart, if he had one, sing. When gargoyles make an appearance, Dakota and Trixie must put aside their fears and buried secrets to find out why these creatures have returned and what they are after. Trixie will do anything to protect Chelsea, her human daughter, who is somehow caught up in this mess. Watching Trixie emerge from her shell pleased Dakota, while her take-charge attitude in the bedroom turns on this cowboy something fierce.
