Lindenblatt’s second Pushing Limits rock band contemporary (after This One Moment) places a daunting obstacle between its protagonists. Rock star Jared Leigh encounters childhood friend Callie Talbert in an L.A. grocery store and is surprised to see that she has a four-year-old son, Logan. Years ago, Jared had dated Callie’s older sister, Alexis, and was very upset when he learned that he’d gotten Alexis pregnant and she’d had an abortion. Now Jared is drawn to Callie and his heart warms to Logan; he learns sign language so he can communicate with the young hearing-impaired boy. Callie once had a crush on Jared and still finds him very attractive, but she’s determined to keep him at arm’s length and away from Logan before he learns their secrets. Nonetheless, they become enmeshed in one another’s lives, and though Callie and Jared both insist they’re just friends, their mutual chemistry is too hard to deny. Romantic angst powers this fast-paced novel, and readers will return to the series to learn more about the enigmatic side characters whose own stories are waiting to be told.
