Two candidates vie for one Boston firefighting job in Chase's flimsy second Boston Dragon paranormal romance. Chloe Arish is a 1,000-year-old Irish dragon; Ryan Fierro is a 40-year-old phoenix from a large family of Italian firefighters. It's love and hate at first sight, but after both are hired for the job they thought they were competing for, rivalry slowly turns to love. Neither knows of the existence of the other's species, a mutual obliviousness that Chase harps on to the point of cruelty. Chloe and Ryan make a cute couple, surrounded by loving and occasionally overbearing neighbors and family, but only Chloe's personality sizzles. Lively and fun love scenes contribute to an overall lightness in tone, but Chloe's virgin status, while explained away, is both baffling given her age and extraneous to a modern story line. And while many will appreciate the author's deft hand with humor, the lack of character development hampers the story. Agent: Nicole Resciniti, Seymour Agency.

Chloe Arish has a single goal in her new life in Boston, and Ryan Fierro is the only person who can get in her way.Chloe, a 1,000-year-old dragon shifter--who's fireproof!--wants nothing more than to be a Boston firefighter, and a highly coveted position has opened in her local station. After passing the preliminary exams with flying colors, only one thing stands in her way: Ryan, a member of a popular Boston firefighting family, who passed with similarly flying colors. For him, getting the job would not just be a matter of personal pride, but of family pride as well, since this was his father's station before he retired. When the captain finds a way to hire both of them, they find themselves alternating between icy barbs and hot stares. They eventually develop a respectful working relationship, even if Ryan's need to protect Chloe occasionally makes him embarrass himself. Their "working relationship" evolves into a different kind of relationship, but all kinds of things begin to interfere. If their relationship is discovered, one or both of them might be transferred, and a surprise proposition from a family member visiting from Ireland presents different kinds of complications. Not to mention the fact that Ryan and his family are shifters as well: legendary phoenixes, of all things. Even so, there isn't a lot of tension or surprise in the second book of the Boston Dragons series, just a few challenges that will obviously be overcome. The supporting cast, including the hilarious Mother Nature, brings something extra to a story that features gaps in the plotline and head-scratching changes in character personality. A fun, readable, if predicable paranormal romance that explores a world beyond vampires and your typical run-of-the-mill animal shape-shifting species. Chase (I Dream of Dragons, 2016) continues her paranormal Boston Dragons series with dragon-shifter Chloe Arish finding the perfect job: firefighter. Her natural fireproofing and other supernatural abilities make her a shoo-in for the job. Until she finds out that she has serious competition for the one available position. A gorgeous candidate with family in the Boston Fire Department and a supernatural secret of his own, Ryan Fierro is a phoenix-shifter. Their instant rivalry turns to friendship and quickly to a, pun intended, heated affair. Trying to juggle supernatural secrets (neither knows the other is a shifter), a workplace romance, and the rigors of firefighter training doesn't leave them much free time. When they are together, watch outsparks ignite! Their not-always playful competition and good-natured teasing enhances their developing relationship. Characters from Chase's previous books and series make cameo appearances, including Mother Earth, who is always on the lookout for a new modern muse. A sexy and fun paranormal romance.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
