A Date at the Altar

Mary Jane Wells provides a vivacious narration of the final volume of Maxwell's Marrying the Duke trilogy. Wells brings the Regency theater world fully to life in all its sordid glory. Having already been jilted twice, Gavin Whitridge, Duke of Baynton, has lost his enthusiasm for marriage, and playwright Sarah Pettijohn is the last woman he would ever choose to be his wife. The antipathy is mutual, and Sarah is content to stay as far away from him as she can--that is, until a mishap at "The Naughty Review" thrusts them together. Thanks to Wells's skill, the banter between Sarah and Gavin crackles, every nuance of their anger is expressed when they fight, and their eventual reconciliation is satisfying.
