Frost, who usually writes lighthearted paranormals (Would-Be Witch, etc.), thanks her editor for suggesting she write “something dark,” and there’s no question she took the advice to heart. The story opens with demonic slaughter, and violence remains the milieu for a Romeo and Juliet love story between Alissa, a muse of the Etherlin, and Merrick, a ventala (half-human, half-vampire) of the Varden. Alissa is supposed to only inspire popularly acclaimed humans who have recognized potential, but she secretly corresponds with very unqualified Merrick after he saves her from a demon. Merrick is a more intriguing sort, conscious of his warring impulses and bound by a perverse honor. When forces within the Etherlin seek to eliminate Alissa, he invokes all the power at his disposal—including the services of a very grudging fallen angel—to keep her safe. The upshot is an old-fashioned gangster story with paranormal window dressing, and a strong stomach is recommended. Agent: McIntosh & Otis.
