Mitchell, Wisconsin, community newspaper editor Monona "Mo" Quinn once again becomes involved in a murder investigation when her priest, Father O'Bannon, is found with his throat slit. Feeling the need to find the truth, Mo assists and shares information with Detective Lashandra Cooper, who is perhaps a bit too willing to include Mo in the investigation. Was Father O'Bannon murdered for his religious beliefs, or his resistance to the idea of a proposed highway expansion? Or was the reason more personal? Grounding her story in the daily life of a small town near Madison, the author weaves the running of a community newspaper through the plot as well as the animosity between residents who want progress and those who lobby for the status quo. Mo makes an appealing heroine. A devout Catholic who obviously cares about her fellow citizens, she must cope both with her nonbelieving husband and with the ongoing lifestyle adjustment brought about by her move from Chicago to Wisconsin. Give this series from a small Wisconsin publisher a chance.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2005, American Library Association.)
