Proud of her commitment to making gluten-free creations, Kansas baker Toni Holmes is startled that some local wheat growers find her efforts offensive. When the loudest troublemaker turns up dead in front of Toni's new shop, all suspicion points toward her. But Toni gets help from her hometown allies: her feisty journalist grandmother, her best girlfriend, a hunky lawyer, a gay shopkeeper, and a mysterious cowboy. The amateur sleuth thinks she's making progress until another murder shocks them all and the killer zeroes in on Toni's home. VERDICT Romance novelist Parra (The Bettin' Kind) takes the cake with this cozy romantic suspense title. While formulaically sound, a very clever twist makes small-town Kansas positively sinister. Pair with Virginia Lowell's "Cookie Cutter Shop" series.
