HighBridge throws a winning seven with this standout addition to its superb series. Although the program includes only five stories, quality trumps quantity. While all are mysteries, the flavors vary from straight detective whodunit fare to the spooky paranormal title piece involving a killer who appears to be the reanimated skeleton of the victim's arch nemesis. A bevy of gravel-voiced narrators trade off delivering stories by such pulp royalty as Day Keene, Hank Searls, and Erle Stanley Gardner (writing as Charles M. Green). VERDICT The "Black Mask" series single-handedly may cause a pulp mystery renaissance! Even if pulp stories aren't your normal cup, the readings by Jeff Gurner, David Ledoux, Richard Ferrone, and others will have even the most casual or nonmystery fans hanging on every word and "shrieking" for more.--Mike Rogers, Library Journal
