In this slender WWII novel, Stewart helps readers feel the inhumanity of war, the cold fear of the hunted, the icy heart of the hunter, and the resolve of residents of a bombed-out Polish town that has survived one opposing occupation after another. They can hear the Russian tanks rumbling across frozen fields towards their unprotected town, and even as the army encroaches, a determined German SS sergeant pursues the last of the Polish resistance fighters who he believes is hiding in town. This highly trained partisan is suffering from brain trauma and has been left at the small town's train station by his comrades in a desperate bid for his safety. Clutching his only possession, a torn family photograph, the rebel instinctively marshals his strength to do what he knows how to do best: fight the Germans. He involves himself with the local townspeople and helps two small children escape, all the while slowly regaining his lost memories. Ultimately Stewart imagines one family's miraculous journey out of the abyss of a truly horrific war.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
