Inheriting a country house with a fearsome reputation, a man finds a diary that tells the story of his ancestor's wartime experiences with the ghosts. After losing his lower leg during World War II, Dominic Lancaster returns home to England only to have his parents send him and his sister to their vacation home, ostensibly to keep them safe from the London blitz. Dominic also senses that his father simply doesn't know what to do with a crippled son. Although he takes solace in a romance with a lovely, young nurse, Dominic finds that the house harbors dark spirits. VERDICT Old-fashioned in tone and subject, this haunted-house tale by the author of Naomi's Room is a solid addition to the genre. The period details of rationing and Dominic's experiences of recovering from battle-earned injuries ground the story and give it heart.
