Stefan Rudnicki has the perfect voice for this epic tale about very different brothers living in Poland. The sprawling narrative covers the lives of Jacob and Max, their wives and children, and their fellow villagers. Translated from the Yiddish original, this title has been popular since its publication in 1936. Rudnicki's narration is raspy, low, and rapid, a pace that is necessary to keep up with the various stories running all at once. His voice conveys a harsh masculinity that suits the narrative trajectory. Though some may find his pace to be too even, Rudnicki's rich bass is an apt choice for this enduring family epic. M.R.
