Lying in bed with "almost husband" Sam, a Hollywood filmmaker, a week before their wedding, Emma Hunter is awakened by a phone call from her mother, Cara. A lobbyist in Washington, DC, Cara tells Em that she's unable to make the rehearsal dinner. Unsurprised but still hurt, Em begins to wonder if, as the daughter of an emotionally distant mother and a father who deserted her when she was just six months old, she is genetically doomed to relationship failure. During a planned bachelorette weekend with her best friend Liv, they decide to go off script and search for her long-lost dad to lay to rest Em's lingering doubts. Em's cold feet take her from Venice Beach to San Francisco. Along the way, after far too many coincidences, she learns that sometimes what you're searching for has been there all along and that letting go of the past may open up the possibility of forgiveness and new beginnings. VERDICT FitzHenry's debut is suitable for fans of light, feel-good fiction.--Susan Santa, Syosset P.L., NY
