Det. Chief Insp. Andrew Fenwick, who combines “intellect and intuition,” faces off against a cunning sexual predator in Corley’s engaging, if lengthy, third contemporary mystery set in Sussex (after Fatal Legacy). The police believe that the arrest and conviction of Wayne Griffiths solves a number of rapes and assaults in the county. Unfortunately, Griffiths’s mentor is still at large and still intent on further crimes, while also seeking revenge on Sgt. Louise Nightingale, the police officer who served as bait to trap Griffiths. Figuring out that there were two predators takes time—as does discovering the link between them. Finding the link and identifying the mentor takes longer. Meanwhile, the attacks get even more vicious, and someone is stalking Nightingale, who’s hidden away on a remote farm.
