Charlotte Carter's mystery, the first in an intended series, takes place in Chicago a few days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. When the granddaughter of a family friend goes missing, Cassandra, a college student, enters the fray with her Mob-connected great-uncle to determine what happened and whodunit. Lizzie Cooper Davis is a perfect fit for the novel's heroine. She emotes a range of emotions for a cast of characters that cross generations and include both genders. The theme of this African-American mystery is the social injustices of the era, and Davis's flawless performance in combination with a richly woven plot makes for compelling listening. P.R.
