Paris during the WWII German occupation. Terrified that he might be regarded as complicit when he observes a German soldier stabbed, cabaret singer Yves rushes him to a hospital and then flees into the night. In short order thereafter, he finds himself the toy of a high-ranking German officer, Oberst Heinrich von Stark. And then, wouldn't you know it, the wounded soldier, Falk, shows up, and he and Yves fall in love. But what to do about the oberst? To further complicate matters, Yves' hotheaded sister is a member of the Communist resistance and, as such, is in terrible danger. All of this terrifies Yves, who is presented as a coward through and through. Indeed, this one-note portrayal quickly becomes tiresome, though this is partially redeemed by the depiction of his growth as an artist and his increasing fame. Though it needs fresher diction and more fully realized characters, this old-fashioned romance will appeal to those who enjoy a love story that pairs a nightingale (Yves) and a hawk (Falk).(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
