Surviving the trench warfare of WWI, Dennis Hawthorne does not want a job in a closed-in office. When he sees land for rent in the small village of Sedgewood, he decides to start a market garden. Hes so busy, he thinks about being alone until he meets Kathie Barnes, a young woman with a remarkable work ethic. The quiet life and long work hours as Dennis wife bring Kathie joy. The only thing she longs for still is a child, and after many years, she and Dennis have a little girl. But their idyllic life is thrown into turmoil when WWII starts. As a member of the Territorial Army, Dennis is called up, leaving Kathie to handle the business, and soon they find themselves at odds. Then tragedy strikes.
