This second title from award-winning author Alexander's "Fountain Creek" series is a moving story of two flawed individuals who struggle with their prejudices and painful pasts on a wagon train journey to Idaho in the 1870s. Jonathan McCutchin married Annabelle Grayson, a prostitute. His brother, Matthew Taylor, scandalized that Jonathan would associate with such a low character, leaves the area after an angry confrontation. Suffering from heart trouble, Jonathan dies en route to his Idaho ranch, and Annabelle returns to their starting point to bury him. Matthew also returns, running from a bounty hunter, hoping to have the opportunity to reconcile with his brother. Since he has no money, he looks for a job and discovers that a widow is seeking a guide to Idaho. As Annabelle and Matthew set out on their journey, their thorny relationship rears its head. However, as the miles go by, they both change and grow. Narrator Barbara McCulloh does an excellent job, and the listener can almost hear the wind blowing through the camp at night. Highly recommended for fiction collections, especially those that feature a large inspirational section.-Nancy Reed, Immanuel Baptist Church Lib., Paducah, KY
