For this anthology, nine popular writers of historical fiction contributed stories on a variety of themes, but they all focused on the impact of World War I on soldiers and their loved ones. Each tale reflects the unique style and ideas of the individual author, which are sure to resonate with readers familiar with the works of Brockmole and the other authors represented here: Lauren Willig, Beatriz Williams, Jennifer Robson, Hazel Gaynor, Evangeline Holland, Marci Jefferson, Kate Kerrigan, and Heather Webb. From finding a missing love to surviving wartime injuries, both physical and mental, to uncovering the truth hidden behind well-meaning lies, there is a wide array of narratives to peruse and enjoy. VERDICT With so many established and beloved names included, this title will be easy to suggest to the existing fan base of a particular writer as well as anyone looking for historical fiction with elements of intrigue and romance. The ending of WWI on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 brought with it a surge of conflicting emotions. As the word was delivered through battlefield telegrams, ringing church bells in villages depleted of young men, and final, senseless acts of destruction, young men, old women, new mothers, and grieving fathers would all find commonality in the impact of war and the fragile peace that was bestowed. Now, nine internationally acclaimed authors reflect on that mystical day and time in stories of the regret, hope, valor, secrecy, redemption, and mystery that united soldiers and civilians, parents and orphans, lovers and enemies whose lives were forever changed by the Great War. From Marci Jefferson's moody tale of a courageous young girl seeking to avenge her family's honor in The Daughter of Belgium to Hazel Gaynor's incandescent confluence of births and deaths in Hush, and including tales by Kate Kerrigan, Beatriz Williams, and Laura Willig, this collection offers an atmospheric homage to one of history's most emotionally devastating episodes.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
