When openly gay Grey Daniels leaves Florida's South Beach to return to Fort Sackville, his southern Indiana hometown, he knows he will have to hide his sexuality. There is a long tradition of homophobia in the town; indeed, one of the 37-year-old's high-school classmates was murdered for being gay when the two were teens. The memory of this past event recurs like a leitmotif throughout the novel, reminding Grey that he is living surrounded by the past. As events conspire to force him out of the closet, he finds his own life in danger. Redmond's first novel is marred by the inclusion of a large number of stereotypes from gay fiction: a homophobic minister, a suicide, a near-deadly car crash, violent homophobia, etc. Thus, in substanceand in stylethe novel reads as if it might have been written in the late '50s or early '60s. This aside, Redmond, who is originally from southern Indiana, successfully captures the spirit and ethos of the place while telling an emotionally resonant, page-turning story.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
