Alice Ann von Wettin would rather be known for her investigative skills on behalf of the Pinkerton Detective Agency than for her relation to her great-grandmother, Queen Victoria, but it is an uphill battle for a royal female detective in the 1880s. As Jack the Ripper terrorizes London, with the police unable to make an arrest, the queen herself commissions Alice to bring the serial killer to justice. The trail leads Alice from Texas, where the Midnight Assassin stalked the city of Austin, to London, where an elite secret society protects its members at all costs. To get to the bottom of both cases, Alice enlists the assistance of American agent Isaiah Joplin, who wants to do more than just help Alice solve a mystery. VERDICT Y'Barbo (The Pirate Bride) deftly weaves modern theories into the latest installment of this Christian "True Colors" crime series. Alice is a bright, refreshing character, and fans of enterprising female detectives, such as Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs and Elizabeth Peters's Amelia Peabody, will appreciate the period details and clean romance.--Christine Barth, Scott Cty.
