Since this was a time of immigration, the characters speak many dialects. George Guidall's narration is stunning. He produces distinct voices for each character, delivering even regional cadences and slang with authenticity. His masterful performance turns this lengthy novel into a virtual encyclopedia of American accents. The pleasure in this work comes as much from the music of the voices as from the story itself.
