Sisters Rachel and Drew Snow--portrayed by Amanda Cobb and Meredith Orlow--are in the midst of dealing with their Japanese mother's dementia when, in a moment of clarity, she tells them to get a book from her sewing room. It's the tale of a Samurai woman, Tomoe Gozen, who is portrayed by Tandy Cronyn in a deep, wizened voice. As the sisters come to terms with their mother's demise, Cobb and Orlow convincingly portray their painful pasts and hidden secrets, while the story of Tomoe inspires them to find their inner strength. One distraction with all three narrators is that it's often difficult to tell if characters are thinking or actually speaking aloud--and it's sometimes difficult to tell which character is speaking. These challenges for listeners seem to be somewhat caused by the author's unusual approach to the story. M.M.G. © AudioFile 2015, Portland, Maine

Dilloway (How To Be an American Housewife) creates a beautifully crafted tale of two estranged sisters learning to make peace with their relationship and their dysfunctional family. When Rachel and Drew discover a Japanese picture book hidden in their mother's sewing room, they have no idea what they have uncovered. In its pages they learn of the real-life female samurai Tomoe Gozen, her battle exploits, her love, and the bitterness of the losses she suffers. The book resonates with the sisters and its meaning rings true across the centuries and is crucial to allowing them to accept, love, and heal their broken family. The story alternates between present-day California, where the sisters live, and flashbacks to Tomoe's feudal Japan. The three main characters are narrated beautifully by different voice actors (Tandy Cronyn, Amanda Cobb, and Meredith Orlow), which helps to bring out their distinct and vibrant personalities. While the story lags in some places, it builds up to a beautiful redemption, and the female samurai story is not to be missed. VERDICT Fans of Amy Tan will eat up this novel, as will listeners of historical fiction and family sagas. ["Dilloway's characterizations of strong female protagonists are well done...a laudable effort": LJ 4/1/15 review of the Putnam hc.]--Erin Cataldi, Johnson Cty. P.L., Franklin, IN
