In the third and final book in Hooker's satirical Terribly Serious Darkness series (after Soul Remains, 2019), the enthusiastic-accountant-but-reluctant-hero Sloot Peril is still trying to save the Old Country from Mrs. Knife, the evil wizard Gregor, and a congress of goblins helping the no-longer-secret society Serpents of the Earth. Of course, they must also stop the revolution of the proletariat while appeasing the Coolist, the nearly omnipotent demigods who charge Sloot and his friends with solving the humanity-ending paradox created when Carpathian spymaster, Roman, literally bets against love. Together, Sloot and his friends--some undead, some demons, some fairies, and one a goblin who wants to be a bard--engage in a dragon-based wizard battle, clever contract negotiation, and some creative accountancy to save the Old Country from destruction. Fans of Terry Pratchett and Douglas Adams will appreciate the farce and puns that are the hallmark of Hooker's writing. However, this book is truly part of a series--readers who haven't read the first two books will be lost.
