Fans of Kim Harrison will be drawn into the imagery of Noble's first book of the Dark Eyes series. Karolina Dalca is a half-vampire, Andre is a full vampire, and the werewolf Roman makes three. After her mother dies in a suspicious fire, Karolina is a fugitive from Canadian law enforcement, and she, Andre, and Roman travel to Romania in a search for her father, and a clue as to where she got her fire powers, and how she can control them better. Their first stop is the safe house of her Aunt Miruna in Romania to get much-needed supplies and comfort as well as more family history to help find her Uncle Loukin. While looking for him, many battles are fought, both for her sake and for the Underground's sake. Though Andre is not pleased that Roman is along for the hunt, a warrior's type of trust grows between them. In between bouts of fighting and the intensity of paranormal, dark fantasy, there are moments of comedy that make this series opener a real page-turner.
