The conclusion of Spine of the Dragon (2019) found the possibility of peace between the Three Kingdoms and Ishara that was dashed by the heinous murder of Konag Conndur, an attack that left the Empra of Ishara in a coma. Thus, Brava Utho of the Three Kingdoms and key priest Klovus took charge to carry out a vengewar across the sea separating their countries. King Kollanan of Norterra, brother of Conndur, is torn between the call for a vengewar and the greater threat of a conflict with two factions of Wreths, who created humans centuries ago. The icewreths and sandwreths have risen from two millennia of absence to renew their fight, and to destroy the dragon Ossus. King Adan Starfall, younger son of Conndur, allies himself with Kollanan, even though it puts him at odds with his brother, who is the successor to Conndur. The story is told from multiple perspectives, adding depth to the conflicts that arise in several locations and building to a nail-biting climax, leaving fans eager for the next volume in the Wake the Dragon series.
