When orphaned eighth-grader Ava arrives from Iowa to live with her artist grandmother, Lane, in New Orleans, Ava's new home, the house uptown, might as well be on another planet. Lane has forgotten about Ava's arrival and, later, often forgets who the girl is and confuses her with her dead daughter. What at first seems an emotional coming-of-age story quickly turns in a tale of crime as Lane's sketchy assistant, Oliver, impulsively tries a get-rich-quick scheme. His plan, which rests on a killing covered up years ago, threatens to rob Ava of her newfound family, unorthodox though it may be. Humid, unfaltering New Orleans takes its place as a character in Ginsburg's second novel (after Sunset City, 2016), and the voice of teenage Ava also stands out, as she grows from scared newcomer to a teen who is still scared but who uses love and grit to make strides that will have readers cheering. Give this to fans of women's fiction and of David Lennon's Michel Doucette and Sassy Jones mysteries.
