Amelia and Parker grew up as next-door neighbors and childhood friends. They have always been there for each other, from Amelia teaching Parker to climb a tree to Parker saving Amelia's life. Now adults, they are facing more challenges. Amelia knows that her marriage is over when she unexpectedly returns home to find her husband with his male lover. At the same time, Parker is trying to learn how to live without the love of his life, who died three years earlier. While researching an article about frozen embryos, Amelia discovers that Parker and his late wife Greer have abandoned embryos. When Parker learns of this, he decides to seek a surrogate mother so that he can keep a part of Greer with him. The story is told in alternating chapters from Amelia's, Parker's, and their mothers' points of view, along with excerpts from Greer's journals. VERDICT The first half of Harvey's (Feels Like Falling) book contains a number of flashbacks to fill in the backstory, which at times become confusing. This is a character-driven (and somewhat predictable) romance with a lot of introspection. Recommend to readers of Mary Kay Andrews and Susan Mallery.--Margaret Bentley, Shiawassee Dist. Pack your beach bag, Harvey's back with another delightful story of the magic of southern coastal towns (after Feels Like Falling, 2020). Childhood friends Amelia and Parker grew up as neighbors in Cape Carolina. As adults, both have suffered loss; Amelia was left by her husband and Parker's wife, Greer, died. When journalist Amelia uncovers the existence of Parker and Greer's abandoned embryos while researching a story, Parker decides they're his chance to keep a piece of Greer, and Amelia offers to serve as a surrogate. Moral issues and family secrets ensure nothing goes smoothly. But Cape Carolina has a way of bringing people together, and as Amelia and Parker move forward, they find they may need each other to leave the past behind. Alternating narration among Amelia, Parker, and Greer allows readers to empathize with each character's needs, wants, and dreams. As with Mary Kay Andrews or Patti Callahan Henry, Harvey spins romance around well-drawn characters, complete with strengths and weaknesses, and always mindful of the beauty that comes from living in the modern South.
