There is something for all aficionados of military science fiction, regardless of what sort of military action they favor, in Drake's 11th RCN novel (after The Sea Without a Shore). Daniel Leary, captain of the spaceship Princess Cecile, is enjoying his wedding celebration at the home of his friend Lady Adele Mundy when he's summoned by Admiral Anston to a private conversation. There, Defense Minister Forbes offers Daniel and his crew the chance for some action by taking the side favored by the Republic in a civil war in the Tarbell Stars. Given the recent cessation of hostilities with the Alliance and the resultant treaty, Daniel and his crew must act without the obvious support of the Republic. The "Sissies" have operated far from home before, but Daniel and Adele will need all of the skill, bravery, and cunning that they can muster in order to prevail. Drake includes the expected space naval action, and there is also well written small force combat. Adele's computer wizardry and intelligence gathering prove crucial to the success of the mission as well. This will appeal to Drake's legion of fans as well as those of David Weber and Lois McMaster Bujold.
