Boyle is one of those authors whose striking words are only enhanced by his audio performances. In this collection, he continues his exploration of life's challenges, and the tone of his voice expresses both humor and frustration in the face of the shocks to which we are all exposed. His unassuming delivery captures the drama in moments both large and small. Each breath, each pause manages to speak as effectively as his written words. Many stories take place in unusual settings--an exclusive lakeside community, a village fractured by nuclear disaster, an isolated island town, and a cultish retreat, for example--and are peopled by characters who are somehow forced to change. Boyle's measured reading eases the listener through trials both calming and disturbing. L.B.F. (c) AudioFile 2014, Portland, Maine
