The Writers of the Future anthology celebrates its 35th year with another collection representing the breadth and depth of today's speculative fiction. The book contains L. Ron Hubbard's essay discussing science fiction's place between philosophy and science and stories by him and other well-known authors. But the real treat is the dozen stories by the winners of the Writers of the Future contest and the accompanying illustrations. It starts with a bang with Elise Stephens' emotionally resonant Untrained Luck, in which a negotiator doing one last job before a storm hits takes on a traveling companion. Other standouts include the very dark Are You the Life of the Party? by Mica Scotti Kole, the story of a father's revenge, and Rustin Lovewell's Release from Service, a twisty, action-packed tale of two assassins. Truly, the collection contains something for every reader of speculative fiction, from stories about everything from AI to Cthulhu, with narrators ranging from robots to spunky tweens, and addressing universal themes like love, loyalty, and what it means to be human.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
