Trapped

Laura Griffin hires private investigator James Devlin to find her 16-year-old half-sister, Darcy, who moved in with her when their father recently died. Darcy thinks she's old enough to live on her own and rebels against Laura's strict house rules. Narrator Celeste Ciulla uses a bright youthful voice to characterize Darcy's lack of experience when she talks to girls at a nearby homeless shelter and to the volunteer manager in charge. As Darcy learns that life on the streets isn't what she imagined, Ciulla portrays her growing awareness of those realities. When she's held by a sociopath, Ciulla captures his sinister plans in chilling tones. The story's dark mood is offset by the budding romance and lighthearted banter between Laura and Dev.
