Danna and Ezra's father, Echo, has run the streets for a long time, and he has made enemies. Danna is in love with her father's partner, Don, and has been sleeping with him from a young age. Ezra is trying to finish college and play for the NBA. He falls for classmate Cannon, who is busy caring for her mother's baby in between studying. The story moves forward to Danna visiting Don in prison. He's there because her father betrayed him, and she doesn't realize that he's plotting revenge. She also starts talking to Quay, who has always attracted her. Ezra and Cannon become inseparable and discuss marriage. The jumps in time lines can be confusing, but Danna, Ezra, and Cannon are especially memorable as they work to move beyond the traps set by their father and older siblings. All of the characters' paths come to an intense, violent collision before anyone can move on.
