Handsome, charismatic and successful beyond his wildest dreams, street kid-turned-perfume magnate Carson Brooks has it all—except the knowledge of whether an anonymous sperm donation he made almost 30 years earlier resulted in a child. When a gunshot from an unknown assailant permanently damages his kidneys, the question of paternity becomes critical. Incredibly, Carson's attorney and protégé Dylan Newport manages to track down Carson's daughter, management consultant Sabrina Radcliffe, in less than a day. In just as little time, Dylan persuades her to leave her budding business, meet her father, step in as president of Carson's company and part with one of her kidneys. As Sabrina's bond with Carson deepens, so do her feelings for Dylan, but their blossoming relationship is threatened by someone intent on eliminating them. Many of the plot elements are both improbable and familiar from other romances, but Kane's (No Way Out; The Gold Coin) diverse cast of characters and careful balancing of romance and mystery will keep readers from dwelling on the unlikelier twists. Perfume mogul Carson Brooks has been shot and critically wounded in his New York office, where he is found by his protege, Dylan Newport. Dylan now has to find the daughter born as a result of a sperm donation Carson made for 20 grand 28 years ago so he could afford to start his company. Dylan heads to New Hampshire to meet with Sabrina Radcliffe, who heads her own management-consulting firm and is flabbergasted with the news of her paternity. Together they fly to New York to meet Carson and develop an immediate rapport. Sabrina takes control of the fragrance empire, including the secret formula for the new and highly successful perfume, and thus becomes the target of whoever tried to kill her father. Dylan and Sabrina work to save the company and figure out the identity of the would-be killer and discover along the way that perfume isn't the only chemistry at work in their chaotic lives.
