Hayden is often frustrated by the unavoidable politics of the British Navy and the stresses of social criticism, but he uses his inestimable skills to pull his ship and crew through countless difficult situations. Boulton also succeeds in delivering impressive and varied performances for the supporting characters with precision and panache. This well-researched story of naval warfare is action packed. This overlong sequel to Russell's 18th-century naval adventure, Under Enemy Colors, begins with British officer Charles Hayden being named temporary captain of the ill-starred frigate Themis, which this time is plagued by both an influenza outbreak and dissension from a trouble-making clergyman. Arriving in the Mediterranean, Hayden attempts to redeem himself by embarking on a dangerous mission to liberate Corsica, but upon returning to England, he makes an untoward discovery. Russell's melodramatic plotting often gets in the way of the action, but readers who relish the sting of salt spray and the tang of gunpowder will enjoy every page.
